A coworker recently asked, “What time DO you wake up in the morning?” I wake up between 5 and 6AM most days. It’s not willpower, it’s just math. I go to sleep between 9 and 10. My body needs 7-8 hours of sleep so I put it to sleep and it wakes up after it gets what it needs.
I don’t set an alarm and I’m not running out the door to get, well anywhere really. There’s the gorgeous time before anyone else in the house is awake and I use it to enjoy the quiet, the trees, some books, or thoughts I want to make space for.
When Callisto approached me last spring to write this book, I said, “Hell no. I need some rest.” Then they told me it was a quote book about finding motivation in the morning. Three things I feel passionate about. Well, now they had me.
I looped in my husband, Aaron Task, because I thought it would be fun for us to have a project together. He’s an award-winning journalist a great researcher, and game for a challenge, so away we went.
We’ve put together a collection of somewhat obscure quotes from a variety of folks. Plus a dozen or two motivational facts and challenges.
Some of our favorites:
“If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” – Shirley Chisolm
Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” – Percy Morris
“A peacock that rests on its feathers is just another turkey.” – Dolly Parton
